Today is our last day in Switzerland. I have never done anything like this, especially in a group. What I have loved the most is that when we are together we are able to talk like we have been friends for years. However, as someone who does crave some alone time or adventures I am fully supported. With the occasional "Where did Fiona go?" and checking up on me to make sure I am safe I couldn't ask for a better group to be with. My first day was the most memorable for me. We went mountain touring which included going to Allmendhubel and the Schilthorn. I felt at peace, it was unbelievably surreal. There were many other moments these past couple days that I also enjoyed. We went to a school called Tatatuck Waldschule. We hiked up a mountain with very young students into a forest. Their school day consists of being one with the forest. We ate, we sang and we danced taking in the energy from the forest. We went to another school the following day and observed a friends 6th grade classroom. There was a tour of all the buildings that are part of the school and we got to talk to some of the students (most spoke English). It was interesting to see there perspectives on American schooling and what they know about it. Something I will take away with me is how safe Switzerland is. I can travel from place to place without worry and it was something that I didn't realize I haven't felt before. It was such a relief after being so worried about figuring out the public transportation. Even if I did get lost I didn't need to worry because I was safe. Now we are on to Strasbourg, France...

After months of waiting, tomorrow is our travel day! It didn't feel real until today that I would be embarking on this three week adventure in Europe. I have a lot of feelings going on right now, a little touch of anxiety for my first international trip. A little bit of sadness because I have never been away from my family for so long but definitely a lot of excitement to experience something I have never done before. I have many things to look forward to like hiking in the Black Forest and going to the Mercedes Benz museum. We have also planned our own outing where a group of us are going to Freiburg over one of the weekends. It is a pretty town in the Black Forest. The most important experience for me is going with my host Claire to her school. I get to teach two lessons, one about Buffalo and one about colors and numbers in English. What an experience that will be! I am extremely grateful to be going on this trip with the most understanding and kind people. We may not have known each other before this but we sure are close now. 32 hours to go.... |
