This fascinating building was a beautiful combination of art and functionality, making it a must-see location for anybody traveling through Stuttgart. I was captivated by the magnificent Killesberg Tower, another architectural wonder that seemed to spiral effortlessly towards the sky, as we strolled around Höhenpark Killesberg. With its own public petting zoo and landscapes that were a haven of beauty and calm, the park offered a pleasant escape from the bustle of the city. We arrived in the Palace Square, a bustling center of culture and history, as part of our walking tour of Stuttgart. The beautiful scenery, accompanied by a majestic castle, intricate sculptures, street art, and bustling street vendors, made for a truly enchanting experience. Immersing ourselves in the local culture and admiring the diverse artistry that covered the square deepened our appreciation for the rich heritage of Stuttgart. Our exploration of Germany wouldn't be complete without a visit to Esslingen's Burg Esslingen. Our stamina was put to the test as we ascended the seemingly endless staircase, but the view at the top was beautiful. From the top of the castle, we were treated to panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, providing us with a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for the beauty of the German countryside. Our hosts took us for a weekend in Freiburg, where we were welcomed by the lively atmosphere of the Freiburg Wein Festival. Surrounded by food and the aroma of wines, we tried a variety of flavors, including the amazing wine slushies that I loved. Exploring the hidden gems, unique architecture, and vibrant culture of Germany has been an adventure. Hallo, readers! As my journey through Germany draws to a close, let's review the final leg of our educational adventure, visiting two extraordinary schools in Nürtingen. Rudolf Steiner Schule Nürtingen, a Waldorf school, and element-i Kinderhaus Villa Reitzensteinle, a bilingual school, exemplify the diverse and innovative approaches to education.
Our visit to Rudolf Steiner Schule Nürtingen was an experience that offered a glimpse into the unique world of Waldorf education. The tour of the school grounds unveiled a myriad of facilities, from the wood-shop to the school garden and even a school petting zoo. As we explored the school's elementary through middle school areas, it became evident that this educational institution fosters a harmonious connection with nature and learning. One of the highlights of my visit was observing a second-grade class engaged in various songs, dances, and typical classroom activities. The absence of a rigid grading system and the emphasis on rubrics and portfolios instead of formal letter grades provides students with a holistic and individualized learning experience. At element-i Kinderhaus Villa Reitzensteinle, we had the privilege of witnessing a dynamic and vibrant bilingual learning environment. The school's focus on German and Spanish bilingualism was shown during the morning circle time, where teachers and students seamlessly switched between the two languages. The school's diverse spaces, from the science room to the dramatic play and art area, provided ample opportunities for exploration and creativity. As we observed the kindergarten-age students participating in songs, attendance, and decision-making, it was clear that the nurturing environment encouraged active engagement and independent thinking. Visiting Rudolf Steiner Schule Nürtingen and element-i Kinderhaus Villa Reitzensteinle has been a transformative experience. The educational diversity presented by these schools exemplifies the various pedagogical philosophies that exist in the world. Each school offered a unique approach to fostering holistic development, promoting creativity, and embracing the individuality of each student. As I reflect on this enriching journey, I am reminded of the power of education in shaping young minds and hearts. The experiences gained from observing the diverse classrooms and bilingual practices will undoubtedly influence my future as an early childhood educator. These schools have taught me the importance of creating a nurturing and inclusive environment that empowers children to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. Our visit to Struthof Konzentrationslager Natzweile was a deeply moving and eye-opening experience. As we walked through the solemn grounds, the weight of history settled upon us. Standing with the remnants of this concentration camp, we felt a profound silence covering the surroundings, allowing us to absorb the gravity of the atrocities committed here during the Holocaust.
The preserved prisoner outfits and shoes, the remnants of the gas chambers and incinerators, and the memorials to those who lost their lives served as powerful reminders of the horrors that occurred within these walls. Being there in person, paying our respects, and offering prayers to the prisoners who suffered and lost their lives there brought a sense of reverence and humility. This visit was a stark reminder of the importance of learning from history and working towards a more loving and just world. Our next destination was the Schwarzwälder Vogtsbauernhof, where we delved into the rich history of the Black Forest. This immersive experience provided a glimpse into the lives of the people who once inhabited this region. Preserved homes, mills, farms, and gardens offered a window into the daily lives and traditions of the past. As we roamed through the museum, we were surrounded by the fresh air and rustic charm of the Black Forest. It was a fascinating journey through time, giving us a deeper appreciation for the heritage and customs that have shaped this unique part of Germany. Our final adventure before reaching our destination was at Sommerrodelbahn Gutach, a mountain coaster that combined adrenaline-fueled fun with gorgeous views of Germany. The small but exhilarating coaster offered thrilling descents, allowing us to take in the stunning landscapes of the Black Forest from new heights. The experience of racing down the mountain coaster was filled with laughter and excitement. (I rode 5 times!) The small play area and trampoline added to the joyful ambiance, it featured the coolest adult size sand diggers! As I conclude this blog post, I am filled with a mix of emotions from our time in the Black Forest. The somber yet vital visit to Struthof Konzentrationslager Natzweile provided a powerful reminder of the significance of learning from history and promoting tolerance and compassion. The Schwarzwälder Vogtsbauernhof allowed us to connect with the region's cultural heritage, offering a unique window into the past. As we made our way to Strasbourg, we had the opportunity to stop at two sites that transported us to the past. The Augusta Raurica Roman Ruins, with their ancient structures and artifacts, offered a glimpse into the Roman era. Walking among the remnants of the amphitheater, theater, and forum, we were reminded of the vastness and grandeur of the Roman Empire.
Our next stop, Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, greeted us with its imposing presence atop a hill. This medieval castle, meticulously restored, provided grand views of the surrounding countryside. Exploring its halls, courtyards, and rooms felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Upon arriving in Strasbourg, we wasted no time in embarking on a lively Strasbourg Highlights Scavenger Hunt. Today, I am excited to share my experience visiting another remarkable school in Interlaken: Schule Ringgenberg. This vibrant school, in the heart of the town, embodies a commitment to cultivating joy, curiosity, and community among its students.
Our visit to Schule Ringgenberg began with a warm welcome from one of our guides, Leila. As a 6th-grade teacher, she shared with us the end-of-year work her students were engaged in. Upon entering the classroom, we discovered an array of book reviews decorating the students' desks. These reviews provided insights into the stories they read, featuring details about the main characters, summaries, and delightful illustrations. After immersing ourselves in the classroom, we embarked on a tour of the school's campus. Schule Ringgenberg includes various buildings, each catering to different age groups and activities. The main school building served as the central hub of older learning, while separate structures housed things like the kindergarten classrooms or the gymnasium. As we wandered through the building, we were greeted by an abundance of student artwork covering the walls. The creativity and talent on display were lovely, showcasing the school's commitment to fostering artistic expression. One aspect that stood out during our visit was the emphasis on student involvement and input. We were delighted to learn that the students actively participated in designing the school's playground—a powerful example of the value placed on student voice and input. This collaborative approach not only fosters a sense of ownership but also ensures that the school environment caters to the needs and interests of its students. Schule Ringgenberg's core values provide a strong foundation for their educational approach. Joy, humor, and curiosity infuse every aspect of daily school life, fostering an environment where learning becomes an exciting adventure. We had an incredible experience visiting Tatatuck Waldschule, a unique forest school located in the enchanting landscapes of Interlaken. This immersive educational environment emphasizes the importance of connecting with nature and fostering holistic development in children.
Our visit to Tatatuck Waldschule began at the firehouse, where we had the pleasure of meeting the enthusiastic children, dedicated staff, and some parents. Together, we embarked on a journey through the forest, venturing deeper into a world where the wonders of nature serve as the backdrop for learning and growth. From the youngest infants to the oldest children aged around 8-9, the forest provided a nurturing environment for all. As we embarked on our forest adventure, the children, teachers, and our group engaged in a series of delightful morning songs. It was a joyous sight to witness the children following their teachers' lead, immersing themselves in the melodies and rhythm. The songs not only sparked a sense of unity and togetherness but also incorporated hand movements, fostering coordination and physical engagement. After, we journeyed further into the forest and gathered near a crackling fire for breakfast. The teachers and parents graciously included us in this communal experience, and as we shared bread and cheese, we observed the children's interactions and their genuine connection with nature. The absence of traditional toys was striking; instead, the children engaged in imaginative play using materials found in the forest. Their creativity knew no bounds, with even a pirate ship made of sticks becoming a vessel for adventure. Tatatuck Waldschule embraces a holistic approach to education, focusing on the development of the mind, body, and hands. This philosophy was evident in every aspect of the children's activities. From climbing ropes to navigating the forest terrain, the children fearlessly explored their surroundings, embracing the elements and building resilience. The immersive nature of the forest school encouraged them to use their hands to build, create, and problem-solve, fostering a deep connection to the natural world. One of the most inspiring aspects of the visit was witnessing the children's fearlessness in embracing the forest as their learning environment. Regardless of the weather conditions, except for extreme situations, they spend their days immersed in nature's embrace. It was remarkable to see their natural curiosity flourish as they learned to navigate challenges and embrace the wonders of the forest. Tatatuck Waldschule serves as a testament to the transformative power of outdoor education, instilling a love for the environment and an understanding of our interconnectedness with it. As our time drew to a close, we were warmly invited to join the children in singing and dancing. Despite any language barriers, their infectious joy and welcoming spirits transcended words. It was a heartwarming experience, reminding us of the universality of laughter, music, and the joy of human connection. The incredible impact of nature-based education was demonstrated during my visit at Tatatuck Waldschule. Interlaken is nestled amidst some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth, and each day presented us with new wonders to behold. On our second day, we embarked on a journey to Mürren, where we traveled by bus, train, and cable car. Our first stop was Allmendhubel "Flower Park" Playground, a delightful and interactive park that catered to visitors of all ages. The playful atmosphere and stunning views made for an unforgettable experience. Next, we ascended to Schilthorn, situated at a staggering height of 2,970 meters above sea level. The Swiss skyline, with its majestic peaks and snow-capped mountains, resembled a scene straight out of a postcard. Although the altitude initially overwhelmed me with a mix of awe and fear, the support and encouragement from my fellow group members helped me overcome my apprehension. It was a powerful reminder to embrace challenges, step out of my comfort zone, and appreciate the grandeur of our world.
